Performed at Bard Conservatory on December 7 2019, in partial fulfillment of my Bachelor of Music
"In imagining a name for this piece, the first thing to spring to mind was “polarity,” a word I associate with some of the harmonic and motivic strategies I used in its creation. Looking at the circle of fifths, notes that are separated by the interval of the augmented fourth stand exactly opposite one another, and much of this piece’s harmonic and melodic motion is “polar” in this way - traversing and juxtaposing these opposing sonorities. More importantly, the emotional underpinning of this piece has always been the simple hope that it would help to steer me towards a truer manifestation of my musical voice than I had yet been able to achieve. Like so many before me in need of navigation, I turned to the North Star, Polaris, to guide the way."
